Launching the Applet

The T-Trans applet can be launched by pointing a web browser to http://t-trans.trace.wisc.edu:8080/ServeT-Trans/ServeApplet or by simply double clicking on the T-Trans Service Application in the AG Client. To run the T-Trans Applet, you will need to have the Sun Java 1.4.1 plugin or later installed. If your brower detects that you do not have the correct version of the plugin, it will prompt you do download a newer one.

Security

You will be launching what is called a signed applet. As a result, you must grant the applet access to run on your machine. The following window will appear once the applet is ready to run:

Java plug-in security warning window asking to trust Trace

Click 'Yes' or 'Always' to successfully launch the applet. The applet will launch regardless of whether you accept or deny the security warning, but if 'Deny' is clicked the applet will not have the ability to save the text transcript should you want to do so.

Client Layout

The client is divided into two main sections. The left is dedicated to the captioning and corrections services, while the right is dedicated to the meeting facilitation service.

Changing Visual Preferences

The Applet has many visual preference options. These preferences can be changed by clicking 'Edit' on the menu bar, and then 'Preferences' which will bring up this window.

There are several predefined style sheets which will change font, font size, text color, and background color all at the same time. To access these sheets, use the Predefined Style pulldown menu. Each setting can also be individually changed. Note that these settings will only be applied to the captioning portion of the client.

Chosing Services and Connecting

To connect to the T-Trans system, go to the file menu and choose the Connect menu option. This will bring up the dialog box pictured below.

You should now enter your email address and the name of the session you would like to connect to. The session name does allow for spaces. By default, all the services are chosen. If you know you will not be needing one, feel free to uncheck it. The Meeting Facilitation service and Correction Service are dependant on the ModTrans service though, and will not function properly without it. Once you have chosen the services you would like to use, you can hit the Connect button.

ModTrans Service

Mod Trans is the captioning part of the system. Everything that is said during the session will appear in this part of the client.

Meeting Facilitation Service

The meeting facilitaiton portion of T-Trans provides a method for moderating meetings. Most meetings today have a moderator in charge of making sure everyone can ask questions when needed and delegate the floor to whomever should speak next. The meeting facilitation system provided by T-Trans attempts to mimick this and will need a dedicated moderator as well to operate it. All connected user are listed in the Session Participants list. Users who have questions or who would like to speak can type a message in the in the Message Entry box, then hit the Send button.

The message will then appear in the Session Messages list for everyone to see.

The meeting moderator can then select a message from the message list, then hit the post button. This will then add the message text to the captioning area of the client. If a question or comment in the message list is no longer relevant, the meeting moderator can select it, then hit the delete key and it will be removed from the list.
